Every year without fail Burglary rates rise sharply in the summer months, see government data here there are a few reasons for this but the main reason
we become victims of this crime is we make it far too easy for the opportunist burglar. Here are Mikes Top Tips for things you can do to make it much harder for them.
- Keep doors and easy to reach windows, including side gates locked especially the front door when you are in the back garden enjoying the summer sun,
barbeque etc.. Maybe even fit a door entry chime to alert you to the door or gate opening.
- Put Keys in your pocket; don’t leave them hung up just inside the door or where they can easily be fished out.
- Tablets, smart phones and games consoles are all irresistible to the opportunist thief so don’t leave them on the window ledge next to an open
window. Keep them out of site.
- Most people now have a 5 lever lock on the front and back doors but just have a simple bolt securing the entire contents of the shed. Consider getting a more secure
lock or even a shed alarm.
- Bikes, lawn mowers and other valuable garden equipment are also easy pickings how about installing an anchor point to an outside wall or set in the
ground so when you fancy a brew you can just lock it up.
- When you go away on your holidays don’t advertise it on social media you may think you know who’s reading your posts but as they say news travels fast especially in
this digital age.
- Even when you are away you can still make you house look occupied by installing timed lighting, getting a trusted friend to move the mail or have it
kept by the post office until you return.
I hope you find this information useful, have a fantastic summer and remember
Alarms, Cameras (even dummy’s), Entry Chimes, Security lights, High Security locks including window Locks are all the enemy of the opportunist thief.
